ALLIGATOR GEORGE

Location : SOUTH AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIA

Length of Alligator Gorge : 3 mi (5 km)

Area of Mount Remarkable National Park : 43,000 acres (17,500 ha)

Located in the north of Mount Remarkable National Park, Alligator Gorge offers some most beautiful and spectacular views Flinders Ranges. The sheer red-brown quartzite cliffs tower 100 feet (30 meters), and steps leading down into the rugged gorge mark the start of two walking trails. One track follows the creek upstream to "The Terraces." Here the gorge floor features rocks patterned ripple lines. These were created 500 to 600 million years ago when the flinders ranges formed part of an ancient seabed. A second trail leads to "The Narrows," where the walls of the gorge are only 10 feet (3 meters) apart and it is possible for just two or three people to pass at a time. This section of the gorge can become flooded, but there are large stepping stones to prevent visitors from getting their feet wet. Ferns and eucalyptus trees fight for light in the shady crevices, but in more sunlit areas dramatic displays of wildflowers can be seen—throughout the gorge it may be possible to spot kangaroos and emus.
